Los SR de izquierda, contrarios al tratado de Brest-Litovsk con Alemania, salen del gobierno soviético e inmediatamente organizan levantamientos y provocaciones contrarrevolucionarias:
El 6 de julio de 1918 chekistas miembros del partido SR de izquierda organizan el asesinato del embajador alemán Mirbach, pretendiendo provocar la guerra.
Simultaneamente intentan apoderarse del poder en Moscú y Yaroslavl, siendo derrotados por el régimen obrero.
Savinkov, conocido terrorista, fue el que organizó el levantamiento de Yaroslav, recibiendo financiación del agregado militar francés en Moscú según E.H. Carr.
