It's really a beautiful, wonderful (and NOT EASY!) concerto by Mozart. With this piece Charlie became the youngest semi-finalist BY FAR in the under-18 age group of Westfield Symphony Orchestra's "Stars of Tormorrow" concerto competition!

Charlie was 5 years younger than any other pianist passing the audition in this highly popular tristate competition! He's also the only non-teenager to pass the audition for the entire competition, all instrument categories included! We're so proud of his effort!

In the semi-final (a month after this video), Charlie played absolutely fantastically when he competed against ten kids b/w 15-17 and 2 kids b/w 13-14. Eventually a 17-yo won the only prize, but again we're so proud of Charlie!

  • I have to say I prefer Charlie's version. He simply has amazing control of the keyboard, wonderful sound, excellent direction of the music line and exquisite phrasing - everything that is so difficult to achieve came together so beautifully. Very secure playing and mature interpretation for any age!!

  • Thanks! I certainly agree with you. I think those who thumbed up the previous post probably mixed up 7 yo Tiffany Koo with 10 yo Tiffany Poon, who's a great talent and who played K459 very very nicely. Tiffany Koo is a great talent too, but there's no way her current version betters Charlie's. But, one day she just might ...

  • Sorry about the multiple comments, but the semifinal round was on Saturday, wasn't it? How did it go?

  • hehe, you're certainly on top of NJ competitions. Nobody other than pianists & judges are allowed inside. Charlie's accompanist said he was awesome and had a fantastic cadenza (he definitely improved over the last month too). The judges said "thank you very very much" then asked him some questions, I don't know if it's routine. We're waiting on results too. But again, it's under-18 category, so we're prepared for getting nothing.

BTW, thanks much for your comments!

  • Charlie is good however his play is not musical and powerful. I like the same play by Tiffany Koo, a 7 years old gril with amazing talent and musical sense. Good luck....

  • Nice playing for an 8 year old. But I wouldn't say it's enjoyable to listen to, I've heard so much better version.

  • Very Nice !! sprightly, clean and clear!!!

  • Bravo!!!

  • I really enjoy listening to Charlie perform this concerto! I think I've listened to this video about 30 times already... Also, I like the fact that you annotated the video to describe what Charlie's doing, since with 2 pianos it can be a little confusing unless you're super-familiar with the concerto.

  • Wonderful!
