I, too, just recently saw Dougie for the first time. My wife and I came from the US to the Gathering in Edinburgh in July where Dougie performed this song. It was very, very moving. Almost as moving as the comment you posted about talking with YOUR dad.
Having recently lost my dad...and having also just seen Dougie for the first time at a local folk festival...I have found this song moving and listen to it often as I talk with my dad,,,

It's a lovely song, supported by such sensitive & delicately articulate guitar-work - a beautiful performance... I'd like to buy him a drink.
