  • Charlie (Yardbird) Parker got his nickname from members of his touring band. one day on the way to a gig, a flock of chickens rushed into the road infront of their car. they couldnt stop, so they hit a couple unintentionally. after hitting them and continuing driving, Charlie told the driver to stop and go get the chickens. so they hopped out and grabbed a couple of the dead ones and brought them with them. when they arrived at their destination, they had someone cook up the fresh chickens =]

  • Interesting, AdamPlaysTrumpet. Thanks for the story. 8-)

  • I like it !! Nice!!

  • Thanks, jazzbobov88. 8-)

  • The nick name came from a bird found dead in the road by Charlie Parker while on tour. He stopped to pick it up and asked the nearest house hold if they would like to cook the bird for supper.

    That's what I learned in Jazz History :) so...not too sure :)

  • Hello, HalfBlackbird. Nothing as tasty as eating roadkill. LOL & XD. I know those were hard times back then.

  • Now the last bird, I really like above all. Nice pics.

  • Hello Geoff. As you can see this is a bird photo video. Live birds interest me more than dead ones. The description of "yardbird" from the beginning of my video came from my computers dictionary and wasn't meant to be an historic dissertation on why Charlie Parker got the nickname. Thanks for watching.

  • I read this story about Charlie Parker and some early bandmates hitting a chicken in the road while driving through the country. So Charlie gets out and grabs the chicken and takes it to a random house along the way and tells the woman living there "Hey we hit this yardbird out on the road." And strikes some kind of deal with her for her to fry it up for them. (I hope he offered to pluck, skin and gut) anyways, the boys all had chicken that night and started calling him Yardbird Parker.

  • the name Yardbird refers to Chickens. chickens have been called yardbirds. long story, but it's how charlie got his name.
