IN CONTEXT 3
Mediation Commission

Born in Amsterdam, Andreas Kopp is now based in Germany (near Kassel) where he is working as a visual artist. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf, and alongside his artistic work, He teaches as a guest teacher at various German art schools. Andreas has exhibited extensively internationally. Recent one-person shows include Continental Drift at Museum Arolsen, and Redemption Song, Ueker & Ueker Gallery, Basel, or the Gobelin # 5, Galleria Borgogno, Arti a Milano, Milan. Throughout his career he has been awarded by several Art Prizes, residencies and advancements. He has undertaken projects for architecture, collaborations with architects, and also received a number of private and public commissions, some of them permanent (like the designing of Europe´s largest indoor event hall, the Cologne Arena, others temporary projects like his recent landscape installation entitled Tableau vivant / 16:9 for Four Rivers, Zentrum fur aktive Kunst, Kassel.

Through the In Context 3 Roads commission Andreas is creating a large scale light-sculpture, entitled 'Marker Tree', for the Kingswood Interchange, South Dublin County. The form of the Marker Tree is based on the outlines of a tree but reflecting an approach to nowadays artificial, designed understanding of nature. It will be a 10 metres high aluminium trunk-shaped structure with simplified branches. Large cushion-like shapes made from coloured metal will rest upon the branches, alluding to clusters of leaves. The cushion-shapes, in pale fluorescent colours of yellow, red, pink, green, and blue, will be soflty illuminated.

The sketches and plans below give an idea of the process of developing a large sculptural installation. The Marker Tree will be installed at the Kingswood Interchange in Autumn 2008. An illustrated leaflet will be available at that time from the Arts Office, also distributed to homes and businesses in the area.
