Thirukural And Carnatic Music
It is unfortunate that the individuals who are not competent to enough to either comment on sanjay subramaniam's eloquent rendering of Thirukural nor the suitability of Thirukural for carnatic music renderings have chosen to comment on both.
For a few individuals, Music is only carnatic music and carnatic music is only with regard to compositions other than in Tamil.
Sanjay Subramaniam has proved how well Thirukural can fit in into Carnatic music scheme.
Thirukural was tuned initially by Mayavaram Viswanatha Sastrigal and was popularized by Shri S Rajam.
MM Dandapanidesigar has also rendered Thirukural in his concerts.
It may be of interest to know that Manickam Yogeswaran a Sri Lanka-born, Tamil musician and teacher—who has worked in a variety of musical, dance and multimedia contexts, has rendered and recorded the Saint Thiruvalluvars aphoristic Thirukkural set to 133 ragams. The CD was officially released at the International Movement for Tamil Cultures World Thirukkural Conference in Toronto in 1998 (where Yogeswaran was felicitated with the title Isai Vallal). In January 2000 Yogaswaran attended the unveiling ceremony of saints statue—symbolically 133 feet high, a foot for every chapter—as one of the ceremonys distinguished guests alongside the events host, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Kalaingar Dr. M. Karunanidhi.
"The mark of wisdom is to discern the truth
From whatever source it is heard."
- (Tirukkural—423)

  • thirukural not intended to be a musical piece....setting it to music laudable effort....rendition with good diction by sanjay is highly satisfying.

  • It is funny to see people who doesn't know even the number of couplets under each chapter commenting on it with words like - "Afterall".

  • thanks a lot for uploading this excellent video... thanks once again...awesome...

  • Barathi dasan's thunbam nergayil is sung in Desh raga. This presentation by Sanjay is in Kuntalavarali raga

  • So what Raagam is this Thirukkural masala?

(Thunbam Nergayil by Bharathidasan was very pleasnt and I think it was Sahana)

BTW Pls dont decry too much about adityabvb's comment. After all Kural is all only 2 stanzas on each topic. Thats why I called it masala.
