  • How do you select the 4th gear (Overdrive) ?

  • @7FP3 It is an electronic overdrive. After you are in third engage the level, release pressure from the accelerator pedal and re apply pressure and you are in. to release you can depress the clutch, or to pass you depress the pedal until you actuate the switch and it will release the overdrive to act like a passing gear. Pretty innovative for 1950

  • I got to drive a '49 Land Cruiser once and I remember how relaxed and strong the motor was as compared to a Champion with the much smaller six. Do you know what the axle ratio with overdrive is in your car?

  • I am not sure but it goes 70 without a problem

  • I had a '52 Champion and I remember it had electric wipers. Doesn't the Commander have the same engine as the Land Cruiser? I remember driving a '49 LC one time and was amazed at the effortlessness of its engine--much more torque than a Champion and quieter.

  • I believe the LC and the Commander are the Same Engine. This car is a blast to drive!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nice stuff

  • It's a beautiful car--it's interior appointments are much more high quality appearing than those of an Olds 88 which it was comparable to in price.

  • That's a real big six, isn't it? Much more torque than the Champion engine I think. Loved hearing it wind through the gears, then drop down into overdrive and was just loafing along at 60! It's appointments inside are so much nicer than other cars in its price class--as nice as an Olds or Buick.

  • Nice car. I love the sound the engine makes. I've never driven a car with the manual shift lever on the steering column. Awesome! It's nice to see everything still works on the car.
