The Legend of Zelda is one of the most appreciated series in videogaming history. Started in 1986, it has spawned 14 games over the course of 22 years, and there's no indication from Nintendo that it will ever be brought to a halt.
In 1991, A Link to the Past was released for the Super Nintendo (one year later in Europe) as the first (and only) Zelda game to hit Nintendo's 16-bit platform, after the first two games reached the 8-bit NES in the 1980s.
Personally, a Link to the Past sits alongside Ocarina of Time (1998) as the greatest Zelda game of all. Yes, the original Legend of Zelda started it all and allowed for a great degree of freedom; yes, Ocarina of Time was a giant leap forward and is still considered by many as the greatest game ever; but Link to the Past really has something particular about it.
It was the first Zelda game to feature a complex plot, rather than just the "get the Triforce, don't let it fall in Ganon's hands" from the first game. It also featured a much smoother gameplay, with new and improved items, massive spaces, the introduction of the bidimensional Light World and Dark World settings (which has a strong influence on subsequent Zelda titles), a wonderful soundtrack and terrific enemey creatures.
Even though I recognize Ocarina of Time as the greatest achievement in the history of videogames, it's impossible for me to rank it above its Super Nintendo ancestor, and thus we have one of the finest adventure games ever. By this time, Nintendo's expertise in videogaming creation was unmatched.
