One thing Kari said about the shepherd using the rod to guide the sheep opened my ears to hear the Lord correct a misinterpretation of the scripture "spare the rod and spoil the child". Shepherds don't use the rod to beat sheep but to guide them. If anyhing they would use it to strike a wolf to save the sheep. How many parents have used this scripture to justify beating their children? If you use corporal punishment, don't cause your children to dread God who guides with kindness from wisdom.
