@linusscoobie what's a "instink"?
-
yep they target only the sleeves.. but even in real life, if it is a schutzhund trained dog, it would bite on command with or w/o a sleeve.. that's why having a schutzhund trained dog is like having a gun with a loaded magazine.. when your dog bites, there goes the lawsuit.. having a trained dog, means a big responsibility

yea training is great for a dog, it gives them a job. IMO that i have seen SchH III dogs ran off of a PSA feild which in that sport its the decoys job to run off the dog and its the dogs job to stay in the fight.
-
im not dissing schutzhund, im saying that its a sport and done expect every SchH dog to repond to real life protection situations. thats great if your dog has that serious edge that not a whole lot of dogs have. some dogs see the sleeve and think "yay fun" and other dogs see the sleeve and then look right through you.

Thanks very much for this info!

fisrt you would need to find a really nice breeder. the cost of a "good" puppy may be arount $1000 or so. the cost of training depends entirely on the trainer. so you will probably be paying anywhere from $500 a year to $5000.

You guys are obviously really knowledgable about these dogs. What is a typical cost for a good puppy and the training to get him to the point where he will protect me and be obedient? Also, can both males and females do this kind of protection work? Thanks.
Since I live my house alone, I don't know if I want to teach him hold and bark, or just let him go with his natural instink to just tear about someone who comes in and attacks me. I will tell you what, my sister was a lot older than me and she had a kid , nick who is like almost my age. My mal hated this kid and never got used to him, no matter what.
this fucker took my elderly mom's bank card and ripped her off almost three grand. and ny shep hated his ass from day one.
smart much?

Proper Schutzhund training by a good trainer should result in a dog that has the discretion when a threat is real or not and react accordingly. One of my son's best friends, who Johann has known all his life, got drunk here one night and got rowdy.

shutzhund is a sport, not real life. if you want a dog to protect, giveing that the dog has the right nerve, you need to do real protection training. most schutzhund dogs are just sleeve junkies, they see the sleeve and the want to bite....

Two points in response:
1. So what if SchH is just a sport? It's better than not having that type of training. It is a tough sport, in which only the best dogs can excel. Johann is up to SchH 2 on his way to SchH 3 now.

2. Johann has that real world protection training. He has kept my SUV from being stolen, he has prevented my son from being hit in the head with a coke bottle and he discovered and broke up a vandalism/burglary at a construction site and pursued the perps down the dark alley...all without command. He knows the difference between the sleeve on the field and the real world.

Johann just watched, but that was all...UNTIL the guy got mad and picked up a Coke bottle to hit my son with...Johann was about 30 feet away, but closed that distance between the time he picked up the bottle, but before he could swing. Did a perfect barka and hold, until the guy slowly put the bottle down at my "suggestion."
