Even if it does negate the lexeme, "A-" still means "without," and "without" still refers to the state of being of the person being explained. "One without gods." "Ism" means state of being, practice, practice or dogma. There is no practice or dogma in atheism, so it can only be a general state of being. "Being without gods." One who does not believe in the gods.
-
So according to you, a prefix negates the suffix, whereas in my opinion it negates the lexeme (as it usually does). That's why I'm stil not convinced of your point of view, however, this is not really decisive. The most important thing is that we come to the same conclusion (either etymologically or logically): atheism is not a belief. (A "possession of a belief in nothing " makes no sense to me, this cannot be called a "possession", what do you possess??? Nothing.). Peace.

"The statement I believe there is no omnipotent pink unicorn does NOT make you a believer or put you in any belief category."
Exactly. It is not a belief. So however we perceive the word to be structured, it means the same thing. The lack of a belief.

"Atheos" was a term that meant "without gods." It was a term used to describe a person who did not believe in the gods, who believe in false gods, or in any way oppose the theistic beliefs of the time. It effectively meant "heathen." "Without gods" is an accurate description. A lack of having a belief. It is a lack of a belief, not a possession of a belief in nothing. It makes perfect etymological sense.
-
But even if an etymologically correct atheist says I believe there is no god, it is absurd to say atheists are believers as well (as some people here tried). The belief in the absence of something cannot be called a belief. The statement I believe there is no omnipotent pink unicorn does NOT make you a believer or put you in any belief category.

Antitheism is a rather exotic term. It does not only mean the belief that there is no god (which is covered by atheism), it also includes the active rejection of or opposition to theism.
-
In early Ancient Greek, the adjective atheos (ἄθεος, from the privative ἀ- + θεός "god") meant "without god". So the prefix a- refers to theos (god) and the suffix -ism is an addition to both. So an atheist says I believe there is no god instead of your I dont believe in god. I know that atheism is also (and maybe predominantly) seen the way you define it, but etymologically it does not make much sense.

Now, if the word were "antitheism" (which there are antitheists), you'd have a point. "Anti" means "against" or "opposite of." That word would mean a belief in the opposite.
Thanks SO much, Phil, I appreciate it more than I can say...Thanks!!!!!!
