The red lens is for a FLASHLIGHT.
That is, you put a red lens on your flashlight (as opposed to the clear lense you normally use) so you: 1) don't ruin your night vision; and 2) don't throw off as much light that is more visible to the enemy.
The red ink on these cards is a little different (has brown in the IRRC) so that you can see them because you can't see red ink when you use a red lens flashlight.
