Olympic stars revel in Nordic-Cross race

Key words: Red Bull Nordix -- Nordic Cross Downhill -- Davos -- Switzerland -- Olympic champion 2010, World Cup winner, World Champion 2011 on starting line -- Marcus Hellner (SWE) - Dario Cologna (SUI) -- Tor Arne Hetland (NOR) -- Alex Harvey  (CAN) - Nordic winter sport season finale -- Nordic Combined -- Cross Country -- Biathlon -- Estonia wins.

DAVOS (Switzerland) -- A total of 64 cross country skiers, Nordic combined competitors and biathletes from 11 nations strapped on their cross country skies in Davos for one last time at the "Bolgen" in Davos. In the final two-time Team Spring World Champion Dušan Kožíšek (CZE) was skating away from the competition but lost control on the final jump at the finish line and crashed. That allowed Peeter Kümmel (EST/1st place), Philip Furrer (SUI/2nd place) and Christoph Eigenmann (SUI/3rd place) to zip past him at the very end of the race.

Thousands of Nordic Winter Sport fans lined the race track, cheering on the kings of the cross country tracks as they raced up and down the mountain. They held their breath in anticipation as world class sprinters such as Marcus Hellner (SWE/World Championship gold medal winner in Oslo 2011 and two-time Olympic champion) raced over the jumps and around tight corners of the difficult track at speeds up to 35 km/h.

"It's just phenomenal, this was the first time I tried this out and it was absolutely thrilling," said Switzerland's Dario Cologna (6th place), the overall cross country World Cup winner in 2010/11 and multiple gold medal winner, as he struggled to catch his breath. The women's winner, Laurien van der Graff (SUI), said: "It was extremely difficult but it was a perfect change of pace from all the cross country skiing."
