http://hometips.gregvan.com/ There's a good chance that the framing carpenter who installed this jack rafter didn't understand how important it was to at least put two nails in the jack rafter. As the home construction process speeds up and the prices paid to construction workers, who are building the roofs get lower and lower, you're going to run into more problems like these. If you weaken one or two jack rafters that are 24 inches on center, you now have a 6 foot roof problem that could lead to even a bigger problem in the future. If you didn't understand the last sentence, let me try to explain it a little bit better. If you had a good roof rafter that's 24 inches away from your first broken roof rafter, that's 24 inches away run the next roof rafter and then 24 inches away from the next good roof rafter, you have a 6 foot long roofing problem. I hope that explanation is enough, but if it isn't, broken roof rafters should be fixed, replaced or repaired as soon as possible, to prevent any more damage to the roof framing or roofing materials.
