The way I did it was I had a super8 film projector. Projected the image onto the wall in a dark room.
Then with my camcorder set up pointing at the projected image, recorded it off the wall.
Its called a "cheap telecine"

no worrys. Most film labs you can post to and they will return your film on dvd or mini dv (or any format) by post.
Expect to pay around £20 + for your film,processing and transfer.
