Milkmaiden

My attempt at poetry. Set to an instrumental version of Regina Spektor's Samson.

I know you don't admire me for my breasts
You couldn't possibly,
so, what is it?
God made me a maiden?
To be rescued? Perhaps once,
but not forever. I'm tired.
I've admired. It's seems lazy to say
"you're the only one for me." Like,
I haven't looked, or I have, and I'm too weak
to find anyone else
who treats me slightly better.
I like your hair, getting longer,
and how I can nudge it from
your eyes
with several fingertips
but realize
it doesn't have to be this nice.
I won't stand for being
an awkward moment, much longer,
or too reminiscent to let go,
too friendly, we're friends. Fuck this.
Perhaps love teaches us
to be humble
Perhaps it teaches us
who we are
in hopes that someone will like
our damn-it-I'm-special craziness, too.
I've been told I'm adept at
writing lyrics
but it's exhausting writing
lyrics that are true
and calling them fiction
just so I don't muss things up.
I'm stronger than that,
and I'm able to admit,
I'm getting tired,
and frustrated that
admit rhymes with shit
because I really should think of
something more creative
but I've slept most of today
and my mind's still waiting
for that one little
whisper
why?
that one little whisper
how?
how to say this
whisper
so pathetic
I get it
whispering loudly
I just want to know.... that you
whisper now...
love me.
maybe, more than anyone else?
or at all?
enough to be the first to call
and the first not to leave
when I tell you I'm upset or sleepy
chase me,
to calm me,
protect me when I'm cold
respect those who love you
and know you,
just whisper, this so bold
so boldly
that I won't mistake
so cold
whisper, breath, warm, sold
I love you,
you should know, but it takes a whisper,
to keep me
to sleep with me
to leave me
to make me believe that I am more than just
a whisper
in the back of your throat.
