dancing ants

Thousands of ants rushing around in a circle on my front steps here in Veracruz, MEXICO--5 minutes later they were all gone. Anyone know why they do this?

When I disturbed their circleby dropping leaves into it, they started off in random directions and were soon dispersed--who knows where???

This is actually known as a Death Spiral, or Ant Mill - Basically the ants lose their scent trail and proceed to follow one another - walking in a circle until they die.

because they still won't find the way back, right? and they can't procreate either, right?

its called the ants mill... n they do that bc they r lost so instead of walking they start freaking out and start running until they find another ant... the ants think "oh here is another ant let me follow it" but the other ant is thinking the same thing so basically they run in circles until they die.. D:

Like raum266 said, the ants are literally following eachother in a circle...till death! Unless they are disturbed and forced into another route. You saved lots of little lives with your leaves! :D
