I've decided to create little features between episodes of Music World called "extras." These will take you further into the culture of the region I'm exploring, beyond the music alone. In the first Music World extra, I'm with Orquesta Astillero bandoneon player Mariano González, learning the steps behind the preparation of mate, a regional tea.
As seen in Episode 1 of Music World, mate is a ubiquitous tea in the Buenos Aires region. I went to Mariano's apartment specifically to learn about the bandoneón, a segment which we'll see in the coming weeks, but we also went into his kitchen to see how he prepared yerba mate, step-by-step. Please enjoy, and do try to procure some mate of your own.
This extra was shot by Alejandro Diez using Erik Braund's Canon 5D Mark II with Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. Audio was captured using a Rode VideoMic.
