I love John Adams music but this 'musical' is far from his best work. In my opinion the closest he's come to writing a musical is The Death Of Klinghoffer, which is musically way more accessible than I Was Looking At The Ceiling. Recently saw Nixon In China broadcast live from The Met at the Curzon cinema in London. I have always loved the music but did not realise what an amazing piece of theatre it is. It was stunning - I will never forget it.

I love John Adams... I really think "Nixon in China" is a masterpiece, "Death of Klinghoffer" is fantastic, and "Shaker Loops" is some great stuff, but this is really kind of some crap. This is the only song in this entire business that I can even deal with in the entire... "opera"? "Musical"? Not really sure what to call this...

Has Adams every written anything of worth. This is almost musical theater bull shit. horrible piss. He is about the most over rated composer out there.

I listen to it all the time, thanks for posting! Could you please upload any of the other songs? I could only listen to it at the Amazon site, and of course they last only a few seconds. It's impossible to find the DVD in Argentina. Thanks a lot!

@shnimmuc This piece IS musical theater, Adams wanted to try his hand at writing in this style.
And YOU may not like his music, but Adams wouldn't be as revered as he is by so many respected musicians if there was no substance to his music. Just because it happens to be enjoyable doesn't mean it lacks musical merit.

I still say that I have never heard a work of Adams that is top notch. The best work I have heard is his Violin Concerto. But it does not ware well. He is played a great deal becuse he popular with the public, not because of his creative chops. I listened to this piece again and needed a insulin fix.
