Part of the problem here is just that the acoustics of a DIY recording are never going to be great. George Michael is a fantastic singer---I don't think nearly enough has been said about what a great pop singer he is. Yet I don't think anyone could improve on the original recording of this song. I suppose GM was wise enough to know that he could (and did) do a nice concert version as a treat for the fans, but that it would be sort of presumptuous to officially cover it.
