Jenny Dance Physiotherapist share with you:
It is suggested that pointing exercises with resistance band is one of the biggest causes of the pain at the back of the ankle.

Please use other method to do the strengthening exercise.

As it may cause lots of tension to the long toe flexor tendons and may cause posterior ankle joint impingement. It also may cause balance problem (interrupt the ankle joint sense i.e. propioception).

The PULLING stimulation is not right for your ankle.

PUSHING should be a better choice.

  • Surely the point is NOT to curl the toes- rather to be extending the toes in a long point, thereby not using calf muscles but rather, the intrinsic foot muscles? I would agree that curling the toes is impacting on the calf are, but pointing toes straight, does much less. Surely this exercise can be done concentrating only on the forefoot, practising extending the toes into a long pointe, rather than using ankle movement?

  • @RobertOliverHill,Thanks for your comment. Even if you have very good control. The PULLING action is causing more tension to the toe flexor tendons. It also may cause balance problem (interrupt the ankle joint sense i.e. propioception). PUSHING action is more simulating the jumping and demi pointe to pointe action.

It is just a suggestion. As I have seen too many dancers suffer from back of the ankle pain, tendonitis and surgery from doing this exercise.
