Scud Mountain Boys cover of Cher's "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" from there "Pine Box" album..

Lyrics:

I was born in the wagon of a travellin' show
My mama used to dance for the money they'd throw
Papa would do whatever he could
Preach a little gospel, sell a couple bottles of Doctor Good

Chorus
Gypsys, tramps, and thieves
We'd hear it from the people of the town
They'd call us Gypsys, tramps, and thieves
But every night all the men would come around
And lay their money down

Picked up a boy just south of Mobile
Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal
I was sixteen, he was twenty-one
Rode with us to Memphis
And papa woulda shot him if he knew what he'd done

Chorus

I never had schoolin' but he taught me well
With his smooth southern style
Three months later I'm a gal in trouble
And I haven't seen him for a while, uh-huh
I haven't seen him for a while, uh-huh

She was born in the wagon of a travellin' show
Her mama had to dance for the money they'd throw
Grandpa'd do whatever he could
Preach a little gospel, sell a couple bottles of Doctor Good

Chorus

  • This cover of Gypsies gave me an appreciation for the song that the original never did. Probably says something about my inability to recognize a well written song because of my disinterest in Cher when it was released. Another song that gave me an enhanced appreciation was Freedy Johnston's cover of Witchita Lineman several years back.

  • at the same time, I think this song gave me an appreciation for the original... it shows how a song can be well written can take a whole nothing meaning when played in a different way.

I too am not huge on Cher, but this song and Nancy Sinatra's cover of "Bang Bang" made me feel more of a connection to her songs...

  • @daviddowns81 just realised all my errors, i should really proof read things.

  • How can anyone say this is better than Cher's version? I mean, c'mon. I think I may have just died listening to this dead version.

  • @ipwnallnubscuzirock In all do respect, you have GOT TO BE KIDDING

  • 5 times better than Cher.

  • plz explain to me the thinkin behind advertising on utube, how is it that this vid with say 30ooo hits gets a full 30 second of irritance b4 the song starts and yet a song with a million hits can go strt into the song with no prelim advert. is it down to the wishes of the uploader? aint my wishes , that 4 sure!

  • Cool version of the song man. Check out our page for our rock cover of Gypsies Tramps & Thieves and see what you think

  • @daviddowns81 I ju. Ast want to say how great it is that musicians can take one version of a song and completely create there own rendition that throws a whole new perspective to the original, or any other remixes of the song, in my opinion it will procure new feelings in any person who has heard a separate, or original version of the song.

  • breathless, its a shame that Joe Pernice genius is not truly appreciated
