On March 3rd 1943 a terrible accident occurred at Bethnal Green Underground Station. This was an Underground still under construction in Londons East End. On that night a large number of people had already settled beneath street level to escape the probable bombs dropped from the Germans on their regular visits to the Capital. In nearby Victoria Park rockets were sent up and these being a new type of weapon made an unusual noise not disimilar to the sound of bombs coming down. In the panic to get below ground and safety people tripped and fell upon each other on the stairacse. (A wooden one at the time). This happened very quickly and the terrible consequence was that 173 people died here - a lot of these being women and children.
Some of the people seen in my photos are survivors...... They have their own stories to tell.
There are plans to build a memorial at this site in the park next to the entrance. At present when the annual commemoration that takes place flowers are left on the railings at the top of the staircase.
The actress Barbara Windsor seen in these clips was born in the area and supports the campaign.
If you can help in any way to move this project on its' way could I ask you to look at this website:

(Music Who Painted The Moon Black by Hayley Westenra).
Thanks for looking.
I think a memorial is a great idea to remember this tragedy. However the proposed design is a monstrocity, please come up with something more beautiful and DONT BUILD THIS EYESORE!!

The building / design of the memorial is nothing to do with me - I am merely just trying to highlight what is trying to be accomplished. The concept is a staircase as the people died on a stairacse. Like everything, some people will like it and some will dislike it. I think the relatives of the deceased tend to like it which is all that really matters in my opinion. But thanks for the comment anyway.
