  • Is that a hippo tooth ?

  • Asian warthog tusk

  • Fortunately, I have an almost endless supply of Obsidian to work with since I live about 80miles from Glass Buttes in Oregon. Unfortunately, I have developed Carpal Tunnel and am having surgery next week, So,get to knapping I'm gonna have about 3 weeks free time coming up in which to watch video's, lol. Thanks again.

  • I hope you have a complete recovery. Most people I've talked to that have that surgery feel great afterward. Good luck. you'll be knapping again before you know it! In the meantime enjoy the videos on youtube. thanks, marty

  • have you seen the big black clovis thats like 9in long? it has those spers like you were talking about

  • ya, that one was a surface find near the E. winatchee site in Wash. I think that the pronounced spurs on that one are because obsidian is more brittle than the agate used on the others. Amazing piece.

  • very instructional video's. I recently (3 months ago)started breaking glass and rocks (lol) in an attempt at flintknapping, Trying to learn different techniques and how it's actually done. Thanks to your videos and a few others' on YouTube (paleomanjim mainly), I have managed to hack out a couple of crude pieces (lol) Thanks very much for the education, In time I hope to be as good as you, Jim, and many of the others I've seen on here. You keep filming I'll keep learning. Thank You very much.

  • good questions. It's a little harder to hold the straight punches but I just use more leg pressure into the end of the punch with my right leg to hold it and it works ok. I don't like them too cruved when fluting usually because I usually flute with the tip against the inside of my left leg and this position is akward for the larger punches that are curved. I do like the small warhog punch for fluting though and it is curved because the back angle of the punch still fits well into the leg.

  • curious about the shape of your various punches- the teeth like in this vid are curved and fit around your leg...others are straighter. do you prefer one shape or another? do different shapes work better for different types of flakes (flutes v.s. thinning).

  • I did the same thing Jim when I started this technique for the same reasons. There's not much difference and I use both. I do like the hammerstone for some things because I can hit the punch at different angles it seems. Keep working at it. I'm stoked that you are getting good results!
