Twelfth and final installment of selected extracts from the opera about Mary of Scots, the Catholic Queen, and rival for the English throne to her cousin, Elizabeth I. 'Mary Stuart' is excellently acted and sung here in English (with fabulous period costumes!) at the Coliseum (English National Opera). The text takes liberties with certain historical facts especially as regards the character of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and a few other things.

Act III. Scene 3.
'Ah, Robert! Support me!'...

'Mary Stuart' was the second of three operas that British mezzo-soprano Dame Janet Baker performed during her year of farewell to the operatic stage. This performance was in 1982.
.
Music: Gaetano Donizetti
Libretto: Giuseppe Bardari
English Translation: Tom Hammond
Producer (Director): John Copley
Designer: Desmond Heeley

CAST
Mary Stuart . . . Janet Baker

  • Note Baker's silent mouthing of the word 'reward' @ 4.41. Thrilling.

  • @mariandelochs Thanks for the reply, and the clips that made me rush and get the DVD which I've been enjoying for months now. As for the flagging: 'I have done no harm. But I remember now/I am in this earthly world, where to do harm/Is often laudable, to do good sometime/Accounted dangerous folly' (who said that? ;-)). I bet this comment will be flagged as spam very soon!

  • I wonder if the insertion of the Nella pace nel mesto riposo march at the end is in the score or it's Mackerras' own little touch. It works very well.

  • What an incredible Musician Baker was

  • Donizetti's music is imbued with so much sentiment by Baker - it moves you to tears - the Music sounds so beautiful and important - not all like when sung by the coloratura stupidi

Even the tempi are remarkable here, everything serves the Music
