This clip was the opening to VH1's old "CardioVideo" morning music video block. "CardioVideo", which typically ran from 6AM-8AM, had a slight emphasis on high-energy, adrenaline-pumping artists and music videos (so to speak), the purpose of which I assume was to appeal to and "wake up" groggy morning viewers. For the most part however, it was your run-of-the-mill block of the latest and most popular artists(of the time) and their music videos. If anything, the "high-energy" concept is most present in the block's funky, ultra-eccentric opening.

"CardioVideo" presumably ran between the mid-to-late 1990's up until around 2003-3004. Near the end of its life, around 2003, the block received a drab, utilitarian make-over which stripped it of its eclectic opening and accompanying commercial bumpers, which were the only things that distinguished it from any other music video blocks. "CardioVideo"'s overnight counterpart, "Insomniac Music Theatre" also received a similar make-over around the same time (the purpose of both I assume were to remove all references to the old VH1 "1" logo), but at least got to keep portions of its equally unique opening and bumpers.

Not too long after the makeover, "CardioVideo" was supplanted and replaced by "Jump Start", which still airs as VH1's morning music video block, albeit with a longer timeslot than "CardioVideo" (typically 6AM-10AM).

Enjoy!

  • By the end of this, my ears were almost trained to hear Lenny Kravitz's guitar intro to "Fly away" come on right after.

  • @Evin07 Heh, yeah. Definitely sounds like circa-1998 VH1 to me. The best period of the channel IMO.........they were long removed from airing only adult contemporary and jazz music, but before they basically copied MTV's playlist and aired Top 40 and Hip-Hop music. I liked that they somewhat distinguished themselves from what MTV was airing, musically. Now they're both interchangeable in that aspect.

  • I used to watch this all the time! :D

  • It was definitely a morning fixture of mine during 1999-2000, when I'd be getting ready for school. I miss it a lot. I w/ish I could see the "commercial break" bumpers, which were culled off of this one.

  • Wow, I haven't seen this in years. I wish the old "Insomniac Music Theater" bumper was up too. I remember being slightly creeped out by that one as a kid when I would randomly see it very early in the morning.

  • Yeah, I miss "Insomniac Music Theater" too. It was 10 years ago this summer that I first saw it and its creepy, random bumpers. A snippet of the Bjork song "Possibly Maybe" was used as Insomniac's theme song. Around 2003-2004 they removed the "Insomniac Music Theater" title card (w/ the old VH1 logo) and replaced it with some generic crap, and then in summer 2005 they replaced it altogether with the seldom-seen "Nocturnal State". I miss VH1's old music blocks.

  • @SuperAdventures Definitely 1998. I remember I was in 10th grade rushing out late for school always hearing this, so many memories... And you're right about how they've changed. MTV used to be THE place for music around 1992-1996, Vh1 was always playing catch up. MTV was Unplugged sessions, Vh1 was Storytellers. 1998-1999 was the era when music revived from the mid-90's slump and both channels were great.

These days its iPod's, iTunes, and Jersey Shore...lol, maybe I'm just getting old.

  • Alisa M. Yetkofsky-Calato

    Nassau BOCES

  • and there is no where i can find the creepy starting

  • i was young when they still had insomniac music theature. i fucking shit my pants cause i thought the starting was scary as hell. now im older and i want to see it.but the replaced it with noctural state. and now instead ofshowing it at 3:00am its 4:00am.

  • Oh, cool. I didn't know that. Yeah, I miss VH1 circa 1999-2001. Good memories of watching it in the summer every morning.
