Enya - Storms in Africa - Composed by Enya and Ricky Ryan with Lyrics by Roma Ryan, from the acclaimed Watermark Album - 1989 - and now we are already celebrating the 20th Anniversary! The song is performed by transgendered musician - Miss Denise Hewitt - on a Technics PR903 Synthesiser Keyboard, first in Itopia Synth Mode and then in a richer full 1980's PolySynth Mode. Everything you hear is performed 100% live in "real-time" with no sequencers or pre-recorded backing tracks!

The song was included in Enya's compilation Album of her Greatest Hits - Paint the Sky with Stars in 1997. The song was also used in the soundtrack for the Peter Weir Film - Green Card in 1990, and as the marketing theme for Ansett Airlines - Australia - prior to its liquidation in 2001. Personally I think that Storms in Africa is one of Enya's best composition from her early albums!

The photo in the opening titles and closing credits was taken by Denise on the Orange River in Upington, South Africa just before sunset - If you look carefully you'll see a small bird and a weaver bird's nest on the tip of the branch!

Lyrics from the Original Enya Song (in Gaelic):

Cá fhad é ó
Siúl tríd na stoirmeacha.
Dul tríd na stoirmeacha.

Cá fhad é ó
An tús don stoirm.
An tús go deiradh.

Tóg do Chroí.
Tóg do chroísa.

Turas mór.
Tor tríd na Stoirmeacha.

Turas fada.
Amharc tríd na Stoirmeacha.

Lyrics composed by Roma Ryan - 1989

English Translation of the Gaelic Lyrics:

How far is it from?
Walking through the storms
Going through the storms

How far is it from?
The beginning of the storm
The start to the end

Take your heart
Take your beloved

Long Journey
Heavy through the storm

Long Journey
Look through the Storm

  • Oh, it's so sweet! I love the combination of church organ with the synth-choir voices. I used this song in parallel to Chariots of Fire in my music theory website to show why C# is used for this type of near epic sound. (for reference on that, my Dot-com sight is Musicolored).

  • @Musicolored - Thanks so much for your inspirational comment regarding the epic qualities of C#! It is more than 40 years since I studied music theory but it is something, like cycling, skiing & swiimming that one never forgets! Warm Wishes & Hugs - Denise
