In this clip you see how extra width of Central Street in Evanston, a state road, is used by drivers as a 4-lane road west of Central Park. The width allows one vehicle to stop and wait to turn left, while others bypass. This happens hundreds of times a day at this intersection. The extra width also creates safety for bikes and is why the street has been designated for a bike path under the Evanston Bicycle Plan. Plans to narrow Central Street or add bumpouts, with conditions already very congested at peak hours, need to be re-examined with an eye to how the extra width operates as a safety valve. If there is no bypass, vehicles will stack up at intersections.
Watch the cars going around the car that stops to turn left.
