i think it was incredible but it was just abit too soft for me. I am in a choir and we sing it abit more fast. Apart from that amazing.

At least they are quiet

I have watched this more than any other clip - it is so good. Both the cellist and the singer, JT, handle it so well -0 shame about the clowns in the audience - that stuff was fun for ages but has now been overdone - they only do it because they know the camera is on them - ignore them andthey will settle down - -except that the stupid BBC in their crassness have now made the whole thing a UK-wide national event and to add insult to injury they firstly Celtified and then omitted SeaSongs.

Agreed. Tom Bowling was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy who died on duty. This beautiful lament is a fitting tribute to him and all of the other 'jacks' who have died in their country's service. My great grandfather, a Northumbrian, would sing it as one of his generation's 'pop' songs, pronouncing Tom's surname as Bough-ling.The audience are beneath contempt. Ignorance is no excuse.

The audience seem unaware of the suffering of the British sailors at the time this lovely song was written. No doubt they are comfortable city dwellers.

@lewisrozenberg Many thanks for note. I have had terrible stick from family for mistake - particularly as my cousin's daughter married his bro Huw in 2009 - I hang my head in shame! I like JT very much and I think he has lovely instrument and technique, indeed because it is so glorious I would have liked a simpler intepretation from him. But that's a v minor quibble esp compared to the sounds & sights from the pit! Regards Sian

@singerswithpresence I'm with you on the assessment of this clip! Just for accuracy, the cellist is Paul Watkins....and I don't think John Tom has ever sung better.

Forget the pit poseurs. Just enjoy the utterly ravishing, honest cello playing of this simply beautiful song ( a very young Paul Watson ?). A small quibble but I think the wonderful John Tomlison, the possessor of a beautiful voice and considerable resources could have done it more simply - the line is so lovely and heart rending esp simply sung by a beautiful bass that it needs no ornament, no pressure. Thank you for sharing.

What's going on with the audience?
How dare they poke fun at this beautiful song. Philistines!
