I hate it when people expect gifted writers to also be gifted media personalities.
The experience of writing is one of slow, thoughtful repose interjected with bursts of fast, furious creativity. A talking head must have the ability to keep his brain and his mouth moving in a fluid manner.
The two disciplines are opposites. I admire people with the intellectual flexibility it takes to be a successful media personality, but writers have the time to fully develop their theses.
You're right, it's tough to listen to at the 13 or 14 minute point. He does better during the q&a section. Style questions aside, I think his analysis of the Bush presidency and the increasing radicalism of the conservative movement is right on the money. However, I think decalring the Republican party as dead is premature (although I would be glad to see them go). BTW, I am not a democrat. Go Ron Paul!
A thoughtful panel on a fascinating book. I hope they are correct that we will finally get rid of this right wingnut regime under which Americans have suffered for the last eight years and many of the previous 40. I have my doubts that we have reached the end of the idiocracy, but I'm certainly hoping.

"um, uh, tiny phrase, pause, um, uh, tiny phrase, uh, um."
it begs for an edit just to pull those out -- but it would be a mammoth task.
