The cardboard template is a wasted step.. Cut your patch piece first then use it as a template to cut the hole in the wall... Also on a patch that small I put my backing strips diagonally across the corner in order to have a screw in all four sides of the patch...

where can i get a sheetrock?

I have done it simular to your way ( with plywood ) dozens of times in remodeling and painting projects. I usually just square off the hole with out making it bigger.

I don't do it like that for small holes! I just use Yellow drywall mesh tape and mud the first coat on the outside edges of the hole. Then the next day I can easily mud the remainder of the hole until I get a clean solid CLOSED up hole.
The final coat is harder than the drywall itself! LOL It never cracks or shows through once the paint goes on for years ;)
That's how I do it though... I find your way a bit too much for small holes like that.

Bout how much would all this cost?

@TheMrSanchos too funny
I repaired a much larger hole in a very visible area following the instructions in this video and it came out great. Thanks Dominick!
