amazing what the film industry today gets away with. mind boggling special effects, sound effects that ring true to being there.
i'm waiting to see the oceans sucked dry and look into vast canyons.

Thank you all for the very kind words and comments. I mainly used Maya (for the modeling, animation, rendering and particle simulations) and Nuke (for the compositing) and I also used some stock footage of the explosion along with some of my own particle explosion.

I'm impressed every single time what students can do, but I know its hard work.

Students have access to a variety of software, but primarily use Maya, XSI, Nuke, etc. The answer varies by reel/film. Still, it's important to understand that software training means little without the fundamental skills to put it to use.
