Hi there.
Did you solve the noise on your beetle? My 1967 also has a strange knocking noise. We're trying to work it out. It's not the tappets as my boyfriend has checked them all twice. I'll try to find the link to my video so you can have a listen!

Yes it was the big end bearing on number three. The case and crank were still within spec so I replaced the big ends and put it all back together and I've been driving it around for about two months now. The engine is an original 1300 and had never been opened. The rocker shaft might cause a similar noise if it is worn too even if the tappets are correctly adjusted.
