USC basketball's Devan Downey arrested

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - University of South Carolina men's basketball player Devan Downey has been arrested.

Details are still very limited, but USC Athletics spokesman Steve Fink confirmed the arrest to WIS Sports' Rick Henry.

According to the Richland County detention center website, Devan Deangelo Downey was booked Monday on a simple assault charge.

We spoke with USC spokesman Russ McKinney, who said early last week around lunchtime Downey and another USC student got into an argument at the Russell House on campus.

McKinney described the incident as "very minor." Campus police investigated, and at the time, the student decided they didn't want to press charges against Downey.

That student changed their mind Monday, and Downey found himself at Richland County's Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Not only is Devan Downey South Carolina's best basketball player, he's also one of the best in the Southeastern Conference.

This past season the Chester native made the All-SEC first team. The sophomore led Carolina in scoring with just over 18 points per game.

He was also the top assist man with over five a game, and he also broke the league's single season steals record with 103.

There's been no official statement from USC basketball coach Darrin Horn on Downey's status.

But according to school policy, any student who is arrested is immediately suspended from the team.
