Mary Lou Williams And Group ftg. Leon Thomas - You Know Baby.
This truly brilliant pounding R&B-style thumper has everything... huge sound, Mary's twinkling piano and Leon Thomas' humerously suggestive vocal... Absolute tune...
You could be forgiven for thing it was an early '60s track but it was actually recorded and pressed around 1975 although it's earliest roots are way back in 1944 when the Mary Lou Williams Trio laid down a vastly different version of this as their first track [10" 78 on Asch]. Different sound maybe, but lyrically some eyebrows must have been raised...
This 45 then, an updating of her earliest work was produced in a run of 200 copies to be given away at a concert in '75 or 6, the label being her own... Nice freebie that, especially as today it hovers around the £400 mark...!
I fell in love with it the first time I heard it, but it took me an age to lay me hands on one of me own. It's one of them that's never lost a glimmer of it's sparkle for me and I couldn't think of parting with it. Nor can I stop meself dancing every time it's dug out and played.
Go on.. play it and you try!!! Something this good gives you no option but to enjoy!
PS I've posted the flipside 'Pittsburgh' here:

@Bopalena
It's done Bopalena, but for some bloody reason it won't let me paste the link.
Look at the top of my video list. I'll put the link in the above description too if it'll allow me.
Enjoy!
