@Barbarainnc Typically we add about a tsp per lb. of butter. So in this particular recipes, we used about 3 tsp. But honestly, it's your own preference if you want to use a little more or less depending on how you like it to taste. And it also depends on what flavor your buttercream is going to be. If it's going to be a very mild flavor like coconut, then you may want to just skip the vanilla all together.
