Colonel Joshua Chamberlain gives his speech to the deserters of the old 2nd Maine, hoping to inspire them to join his depleted unit in the upcoming battles at Gettysburg.
By the third day of Gettysbyrg, he had lost at least half his Men, so it was good that those 120 Men joined!

why would he shoot someone from his state who was on the same side as he was

@Christiansk8r673 No, what the problem was was that the army had wanted them shot because they didn't understand the situation. So they were telling Chamberlain that if he couldn't get them to cooperate, then they should be shot.
So Chamberlain was just saying that they knew he wouldn't do that and be able to face his home again. So he was just trying to convince them they could still fight with Maine Men.

@psywang Definitely, he was in real life, and the actor who played him, Jeff Daniels, did a great job of portraying him and really outdid himself here. Thanks for watching.
