Why are you tuned down a half-step? TO make it easier to sing?

I decided to tune myself down a half-step about a year ago, because Phil Ochs was and I wanted to play "I Ain't Marching Anymore" note-for-note with him. Since I'm neither a tenor nor a baritone, I find myself often in a bad key, so adding the Eb key makes singing some songs easier.
