Speech:

We are here today to celebrate and advocate for the cause of peace. As the Student Body President of Long Island University, I think I speak for all students here and abroad when I say that it is not only a pleasure to be taking part in something as important as this peace fair, but it is our duty to take a stand against the wrong doing taking place in the name of justice. Now peace and justice is the goal, but there are many different means as to how to achieve that goal.

Now yesterday Sean Bell's murderers (as I refer to them) were acquitted of all charges. That is, acquitted of taking the life of some one's father, brother, friend and husband. Acquitted for promoting a system that is responsible for systematically and harmoniously, mentally enslaving a dispossessed people. While it is true that not every police officer is bad, I will say that the system of law enforcement in America was not made to protect and serve the minorities of today's America and because of that today we have to take a stand.

Today I am calling for all people to take a stand against the injustices being forced upon, just us. I am calling to all of the youth in America, to put down your starbucks coffee and turn off your ipods and listen for the sound of revolution. For if we do, there is no telling what can happen tomorrow. For we will lead the revolution.

No black man's tax dollars should be used to support a system that imprisons 11.5% of us and is responsible for the detriment and depletion of or communities in many ways. The youth have to band together and fight what has happened. This does not mean violence necessarily, but it does mean action. We have to understand that we are all Sean Bell, regardless of race, sex, religious or economic background. We are the people that make up this society and by no means should we fear what our society has to offer. Huey P. Newton said that "The revolution lies in the hands of the young," so today we have a choice to make, will we finally achieve the dream that revolutionaries such as Martin, Malcolm and all of the Black Panthers fought for or will we allow the media continue to dictate what matters to us. I've chosen my path and I can't take them all on by myself, only you can determine what the future has in store, for you hold the present in the palm of your hand, please my people, take a stand.

Revolutionary Love.

Thank you.
