  • Seemingly it is not the point in his contending with the authors of the quotes whether or not a self-interest guides us. What matters is that society and community and a sense of belonging also matters in our decision making and motivation. Look for Maslow's theory of human needs. You will see a sense of belonging to a community there.

  • Thats a distorted perspective you are applying to the quotes. What Milton Friedman and Thatcher are saying is that money or not we always act through self interest.
