Dean remembers the life he has shared with his daughter for the past sixteen years while travelling back to Kansas with Rae beside him, still trying to process everything from facing Alistair and recieving a quick glimpse of her mother. Dean knows he must tell Rae the truth about he and Anna but as he thinks it through, he knows that in doing so, he could tear Rae's world apart.
However upon returning home, and with a little help from Castiel, Rae is able to glimpse her father's past and see the meeting of her parents and the hard seperation because of who and what her mother was. She realises the sacrifices her parents made- the sacrifice her father made for her to grow up in safety, and realises that he is her true hero.
In turn, Dean inadvertantly learns that his daughter is more special than even he thought possible as he witnesses Rae literally go through fire and not get burned in order to save an injured man from a burning building, around the time he and Sam where searching for Alistair.
After the shared experiences, it takes a near-death experience to reunite the father and daughter once more. They know that together, regardless of the future, they can handle anything.

The clip from Heroes where Claire at one point told Peter 'You're totally my hero'....I like that you used this for Rae and Dean and that little smile he gives her right after... In context it's very sweet.
