Ah, the power of the internet. A stranger (Nick) half-way around the world was touched by my Carl Sagan gravesite-visit video. He asked that, if i should ever return to the grave, to give a message to Carl. So here you go Nick. I placed a pale blue marble on your behalf. Those same newspapers dating back from Nov. & Dec. are still there(!), amazingly intact, despite the wind, snow, ice, sun and rain. We are all still wondering who left them. It remains a mystery for the Sagan Appreciation Society.

The marble was bought for a quarter from "Pastimes" in the old Dewitt school-building mall. Long story short: Adam, the man who runs the store has a daughter named Gretta. When she was about 5 she was best friends with Carl & Ann's daughter Alexandria(Sasha). It's a small world, and Ithaca is a very small town. I'm pleased to say that Carl enjoys much goodwill among his fellow Ithacans, and people are very willing to interject their own Carl stories when his name is brought up. Ithaca is a special place. And Carl was a special human. No wonder he lived there for half his life.

  • If any of you can't make it to the Sagan Gathering in Ithaca starting on May 31st, you can mail me any messages or momentos and I'll place them at Carl' s grave. Spread the word.

  • chris says thank you, i too will place a marble for carl

see you in june sardonicussrex at the festival

  • The Gathering has been scaled back. The Sagan Brigade @ the Ithaca Parade will still happen, but the Gathering will be limited to tabling on Carl's contributions, science, and pressing matters of the day, and petitioning for the Carl Sagan USPS stamps.

  • There will still be the visits to Carl's grave to pay our respects and of course the Sagan Planet Walk. I visited Carl's grave twice over the Earth Day weekend and couldn't find Nick's pale blue marble. I think somebody in the area might have seen the video and decided to take it.

  • I am stifling a tear... this hurts almost as much as listening to a pale blue dot.

  • A touching tribute to a great man.

  • Yes, unless you're a time traveler visitor from 2010 or later :-) then there are no US Carl Sagan stamps currently.

  • No, there are NO Carl Sagan stamps. There IS a campaign to get Carl put on a US FOREVER -class stamp.

Search for it on YouTube and you'll see the video about the campaign.
