Ford Transit Central Asia Expedition - ep.5 - Tajikistan (Danger!)

Fifth episode of our trip from Poland to Central Asia by Ford Transit (diesel, 2,5litres). The trip took place between 7th July and 16th August 2009. We rolled on our tyres asphalt and dust from Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The fifth episode is a slide-show presenting results of civil war that took place in Tajikistan from 1992 to 1997. This war, as probably every domestic war, was very bloody. According to estimates 50-100 thousand people died and more than million were displaced. Tajikistan infrastructure was devastated. The war ended by signing an armistice. The opposition was granted 30% of governmental offices.

The slide-show presents minefields that can be still found in present Tajikistan on the way from Khorog to Dushanbe, destroyed armoured vehicles like BMPs or BTRs and patrols of The Swiss Foundation for Mine Action (FSD), which deals with demining operations.

In the background you can hear the song from Polish series from late 60s about II World War "Czterej pancerni i pies" (Four tank men and a dog), which is still very popular in Central Asia.
