There is a major difference between a bark that invites you to play and a bark that warns you not to come any closer. How would animals survive if they couldn't understand the signals? Even people who don't own dogs can make the difference! It's not like dogs "developed" different kinds of vocals so humans could understand them better, lol.

Do you have to be a scientist to understand that? :) That is their language. Can you understand different English words? Different intonations? D'oh.

well is would be pretty stupid in evolutionary terms if they couldn't.

Human beings utter different types of sounds. Research shows that humans can understand the differences between these different types of founds.

OMG this has got to be a joke right, wow you guys are so smart, any dog owner could have told you this!! lol

@beckytheinsomniac There's a difference between asserting something as opinion and fact. As silly as it sounds and what appears to be a waste of resources, when dealing strictly with provable facts, it lays the foundation for more research... likely into areas that neither of us can fathom. Take for example the MP3 format, it was created by understanding what sounds a cat could hear.

do scientist not realize that humans arent the only ones with a spoken language. are they just now realizing that all animals can communicate and that they are all smarter than humans??? im be serious for all you haters out there, if you dont believe me think about it, most animals survive on instinct if you plop them in a forest they'll know how to forage for food or wat not. if you plop a human they will spend all their time looking for a road cause we cant survive without our technology

that chick sounds so dull its depresing
"New research shows that dogs can distinguish between two different types of barks."
You dont say... Who did this research? A two year old? How much money did it take them to find that out? :/

if dogs can understand human words and associate them with doing a task, (which is what i find amazing) it should be plain old obvious that they can distinguish different emotions in another dogs bark.
