(3) spent 20 years in a racist church,
(4) got out maneuvered by Russia into scrapping the missile defense shield in Poland with nothing gained in return.

@Twilightifyable cultural bias. Qawwmana = is a verb and refers to a person who STANDS UP FOR another person in a protective way. Therefore this verse describes how men are in charge women in the sense that they MUST provide the care and welfare for women, that is financially, emotionally, physically, sexually etc. Don't be ignorant and try to understand things that are difficult for you.

@Twilightifyable 4.34 is the most misinterpreted and misunderstood verses of the Qur'an, it states IN ARABIC, "ar rijaalu qaw-waamuuna 'Alan nisaa.." which is translated as either "Men are in charge of women" or "Men are the protectors and maintainers of women" The latter gives ignorant English speakers confusion to what the verse is saying since to them charge and protectors are too different things.
