@thecrazyaviator you're right that the end results count, but no one is born with the skills necessary for the end results. The way to get these end results is by embracing hard work, overcoming challenges, and learning from criticism...which all derive from the growth mindset.
This is the paradox that Dweck talks about in her book: those that focus less on end results actually end up with more end results than those who focus on them.
But what about the kid who works really hard and NEVER reaches success?
And it does matter if a person is good or not. I would never hire a doctor who failed all his classes, but at least he had fun in them.
Dweck has good ideas, but she to fell the "ALL OR NOTHING" way of thinking. Both enjoying what you are doing and expecting results are good things to value. Not just one or the other. ... fixed mindsets are good and yes even growth mindsets are good...and both have their problems.
I just noticed that my boss was results oriented (of course) and pressured me to give certain results. He practically took away the fun in the job I was doing and made me so stressed that I fell into depression. Did I give better results under pressure? I don't think so, but I did quit that job. That's what he basically got from pressuring me. Besides, he just wanted his style, wasn't open minded to other ways of resolving Design problems.
I love this advice. It is so important to help our kids be happy and hardworking. The emphasis on practical ways to praise our kids so they feel fulfilled is so important. Keep em coming
