Wild Flag's self-titled debut album is a light, fun, and upbeat reformation for these indie rock veterans. I think some longtime fans--especially those in the Sleater-Kinney camp--will expect a little bit more. That's fine and understandable. I feel the same way to an extent.
However, after several listens, the simplicity of this album no longer bugged me. Instead, it made this album catchy and invigorating. These ladies know what complicated music is, and this project is obviously a conscious effort to make something more straightforward, you know?
This album is a handful of tracks that aim straight for those looking to shake hips, sway shoulders, and raise fists.
What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?
7/10

LEAST FAV TRACK: SOMETHING CAME OVER ME
WILD FLAG- SELF-TITLED / 2011 / MERGE RECORDS / POST-PUNK, INDIE ROCK
I think 7/10 is fair. I absolutely love this band dynamic. I feel like what brought the album down most was the mixing and the almost too-polished feel. I am obsessed, so naturally I had heard a lot of live versions of many of these songs, and I felt like particular recordings (Glass Tambourine, Future Crimes, and Black Tiles) just didn't have the same feel that the live versions of the songs had.
My personal album-version favorite is Short Version. They had that song dead-on.

"Racehorse" just might be one of the most ridiculously good tracks I've ever heard. "Glass Tambourine" gets better every time I listen to it, I love the Pink Floydish sound at the end of it. All the tracks are amazing, I just wish there were more.

I do not know jack about Sleater-Kinney. I had never heard of Helium. Now I am going back and investigating that stuff, and it is good. But Wild Flag is fantastic. Give them a 10!

I feel like this review is completely based on comparing the album to earlier Sleater-Kinney material. The band name is different, with different members composing it - why do you expect it to be another Sleater-Kinney album? I wish you would just review the album for what it is, but you seem unable to do so.

I can't say that I have major disagreements with this review. I did go into buying that album expecting something as massive as "The Woods" where both Janet Weiss and Carrie Brownstein melted my face off with how nasty they were on that album. Wild Flag is really muted. I wanted to feel more especially knowing who is in that band. The album is fun, and it's a blast to hear live. I do enjoy listening to it, but I always go back to "The Woods" when I need substance.

This review is great. Been listening to the entire album for almost a week now. It's really fun. :) Can you please make a review of The Dear Hunter's The Color Spectrum? Thanks.
