  • i think they may shut down now...

  • @Robkar28 So being there first grants them the right to uncontrolled mercury emission into the air? That kind of logic does not sound too smart to me. When they started 100+ years ago, there was no Silicon Valley. Check the population within 5 miles radius of this polluter nowadays. If they continue to operate, they need to be responsible to the population. If you drive drunk, you lose your driver license. If you pollute, you lose your mining license. Simple enough for you?

  • @Tony1584 Shutting them down is unrealistic. They probably have lobbyists paying off the county officials. The county needs the tax dollars from it. Barry Chang in Cupertino City Council is fighting an uphill battle because this plant is on county land. The least we can do is to force them to comply to emission control and put them under EPA monitoring.

  • If EPA monitors the kiln in Seattle, why don't they monitor this one too? The mercury released here is estimated to be 10 times more than those in Seattle. Does EPA believe Silicon Valley residents are immune to Mercury pollutants?

  • Lehigh teared down two huge stacks more than 20 years ago. They did not want the plant to be visible from east side. They believe "out of sight, out of mind."

I was one of the hundred of thousands cheated by them.

  • The June 2008 Notice of Violation also clearly demanded Lehigh to cease stockpiling the mining waste outside of the permitted area. Lehigh Cement used an area outside their permitted quarry area to place overburden (unusable quarry material) not allowed under the 1985 reclamation permit. This overburden possibly exposes nearby residents to hazardous dust.

Lehigh's illegal dumping the mining waste is clearly violating California Environment Quality Act(CEQA).

  • You sound like not graduating from elementay! Don't know how to do your homework. Welcome to be my neighbor if you love toxic pollutants as much as airplane noise.

Lehigh Southwest Cement Plant has been served at least two Notices of Violations since 2006 from Santa Clara County Planning Department. On 7/20/2010, the county Senior Planner confirmed that the violation is continuing without any penalty.

  • You are Kidding right dumb ass!!!! When did you move to the residence you are living in now? Ok, now you have that figured out let us all know when the mine was opened and show how stupid you sound!!!!!! Move your ass away if you don't like it there. They can't just pick up the mine an move it anywhere. You are just as dumb as the people who complain about airplane noise after they moved next to an airport.
