Tough to pick a favorite recording of this aria. I enjoy several recordings by several great tenors. Jussi's 1959 live performance is more emotional and less strict than this one. It may have been inspired by Caruso's incredible 1904 recording, which came straight from the heart and is considered by many to be the gold standard. These are my two favorite tenors. Corelli is right behind them. I also enjoy Pavarotti, but he doesn't move me the way these three do on several popular arias.

True test of "E lucevan": Never mind who is singing it, or where, or when. Just close your eyes and listen. If you shed a tear or two end of the performance, it is great rendition. If you don't, it ain't!
