http://www.permies.com I had this idea to build a rocket mass heater that was not cob. I wanted to see if a wood bench filled with sand would work well. It would have three major differences from the other rocket mass heaters that I know of. A wood-based look; much lighter, so it could be used in places with an iffy floor; and more portable: I hope it can be moved into a truck in an hour and rebuilt in an hour.

The first version had a little smokeback and wasn't as rockety as I would like. So we gutted the insides and made some changes.

The real purpose of this video is to show my progress to those that know more than me (are you reading this Ernie?) so they can make suggestons. But I do know that there are thousands of folks that are keen to know a lot of this stuff too.

This new version does work much better and I am now certain that this will be a success. I just wanna make a couple more tweaks.

Filmed in a secret hideout in missoula, montana!

  • How did you overcome the smoke back and insufficient draw issues?. I have the same problems using a 1 metre double skin s/steel riser and a 47k gas bottle for a barrel (with the bottom cut off)

clearance inside top was 2". Without the barrel on the draw is amazing!!? all 6" pipe

  • @MrPhreeradical Lots of chats with ernie and I came up with an improved heat riser. There is another video that shows it off.

  • I like the video. But I just wanted to know is there anything I can use besides a barrel to make a rocket stove. As a petroleum barrel are nowhere to be found here. Would it be posssible to use a galvanized trash can instead? Thanks for your response.

  • @Abby6786 I think a trash can would not work. I have seem some cutom bells.

  • Did you ever release the plans for this ? And yes I bought the book :)

  • @spystyle The closest thing to "plans" is what is on the forums at permies.

  • @paulwheaton12 Many thanks

  • @Abby6786 it is NOT a good idea to use anything that is galvanized...when heated, galvanized metal will give off fumes that are toxic! Please be careful!

Plus, the trashcan metal is fairly thin and would not last long, in my opinion.

  • I like the video. I am trying to make at least a small rocket stove. But, I can only find a galvanized trash can. Is it really harmful to use this type of can? It's the only thing I can find Thank you, Abby

  • question is how

  • and after a time you need to empty it so the ashes wont block anything
